The ROSAT Deep Survey in the Lockman Hole is the most sensitive X-ray survey performed to date, encompassing an exposure time of ksec with the PSPC and a total of Msec with the HRI aboard. The authors have carried out a moderate-depth (70 ks), contiguous square degrees Chandra survey in the Lockman Hole Field of the Spitzer/SWIRE Legacy Survey coincident with a completed, ultra-deep VLA survey with deep optical and near-infrared imaging in-hand.

The Chandra Deep Field North (CDFN, Brandt et al., ) and the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS, Giacconi et al., , Rosati et al., ) have been observed with the ACIS-I array for 2 and 1 Ms, respectively, and represent the two deepest X-ray surveys to the 2 Ms CDFN the achieved sensitivity limit is ∼ × 10 −17 erg cm −2 s −1 in the soft band and ∼ × 10 −16 erg. In particular, the redshift distribution of soft X-ray selected AGN in the ROSAT Ultra Deep Survey (UDS, Lehmann et al. ) at a limiting flux of f ~ erg cm-2 s-1 was nicely reproduced, as well as that of hard X-ray selected AGN in the ASCA Large Sky Survey (Akiyama et al. ) at a limiting flux of f ~ erg cm-2 s The deep X-ray surveys performed by the two major X-ray observatories on flight, Chandra and XMM, are being resolving the bulk of the cosmic X-ray background (XRB) in the 2{10 keV energy band, where the sky flux is dominated by extragalactic emission. I present the X-ray analysis of the Chandra Large Area Synoptic X-ray Survey (CLASXS) of the Lockman Hole Northwest field. The contiguous solid angle of the survey is about sqr degree and the flux limits are 5x10^ erg/cm^2/s in the keV band and 3x10^ erg/cm^2/s in the $$~keV band.

So the Lockman Hole serves as a relatively clear window on distant objects, which makes it an attractive area of the sky for observational astronomy surveys.
